TL; DR

  • ZTE has posted a teaser on the Axon 30.
  • It is said to be the company’s first smartphone with its second-generation under-display camera technology.

Chinese manufacturer ZTE was the first to introduce a phone with a camera under the display. While the ZTE Axon 20’s unique feature had many problems, it was a leap forward for the company and the industry as a whole. Now the company is preparing its latest flagship, which includes an improved version of this camera system.

The first teaser rendering of the Axon 30 was posted on Weibo, which details ZTE’s first flagship with its second-generation under-display camera technology.

The rendering shows the phone’s all-screen design – a notable departure from the punch-hole models Axon 30 Pro and Axon 30 Ultra.

Second generation under display camera

Judging by ZTE’s claims, the Axon 30 should see a significant improvement in selfie shoots. The area of the screen above the camera will have twice the pixel density, reducing the blurry effect seen with the Axon 20. The company also speaks of a refresh rate of 120 Hz. We should expect some improvements in camera quality as well, although ZTE doesn’t specifically mention this.

In February, ZTE presented a 3D face unlock system with a light scanner under the display. However, it is unclear whether this will debut on the ZTE Axon 30.

What else can we expect?

ZTE neglected to describe the phone’s other specs, but we can make some guesses based on its siblings. The ZTE Axon 30 Pro and Ultra pack Snapdragon 888 chipsets, UFS 3.1 storage, 6.67-inch displays, and quad rear cameras with 64 MP sensors. Expect ZTE to borrow from these devices.

When does the ZTE Axon 30 land? The company hasn’t confirmed the phone’s launch date, but rumors suggest it may debut in July. If so, ZTE will launch its second-generation under-display camera technology months before the rumor that Samsung is launching its first one.
