YouTube Rewind is gone for good, 2018 video definitely not to blame
TL; DR
- YouTube Rewind is now gone for good, the company has confirmed.
- The video sharing website denied the past few videos had anything to do with the decision.
YouTube’s Rewind year-end series has been around for years, and people generally looked forward to it until the terrifying video debuted in 2018. The company would follow up on Rewind 2019 (which was also negatively received) but decided to skip a Rewind video last year due to the pandemic.
Now the video platform has told Bag filter (Hours.: The next web) that it finally kills the official Rewind video series. Did you think the reception of the 2018 or 2019 videos played a role in the company’s decision? Well, YouTube insists that its platform is just too big to encapsulate in a short video compilation.
“This decision is due to the fact that Rewind’s format is very, very limited and cannot properly capture the breadth of the community,” the company stated in a comment below the Rewind video from 2018. But it also told Bag filter that it informally hands over the task of Rewind to the community.
“Since Rewind launched in 2011, we’ve seen creators of MrBeast [54 million views], elrubiusOMG and Slayy Point, and so many more, are creating their own year-end videos that uniquely capture the year from every perspective, ”YouTube told the point of sale.
“It will continue to be inspiring to see the myriad ways the world’s most creative content producers – our YouTube creators – capture the end of the year in their video recaps as YouTube withdraws its own Rewind video.”
Of course, we can’t help but believe that YouTube would have continued its Rewind series if the last couple of posts had also been positively received. In any case, it appears that the company will continue to offer year-end trend lists, teasing a “global year-end interactive experience” instead.
