TL; DR
- The new YouTube Music app is now available on select Wear OS 2 watches.
- Users can download music to their devices and listen to it offline.
- Eligible devices include Fossil Group 6th generation models and more.
YouTube Music brings good news for Wear OS users who haven’t upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 yet. Starting this week, selected devices with Wear OS 2 can also access the music app. Above all, this means the long-awaited support for offline listening, a feature that many athletes appreciate.
The YouTube Music app on Wear OS 2
If you’re a Wear OS 2 user who thinks running quietly is boring (or if you can’t stand the sound of your own heavy breathing), YouTube Music is an exciting app to welcome aboard. Premium subscribers can not only access more than 80 million songs, but also download music directly to their device for offline listening. This means that you have all of your favorite songs and playlists right on your wrist. The app also offers Smart Downloads, which automatically update your downloaded music when your device connects to WiFi.
YouTube Music isn’t the first app to offer Wear OS 2 users offline listening as we saw a similar move from Spotify last month. However, for some, the announcement comes as a bit of comfort while they wait for Wear OS 3. Watches suitable for the updated platform still have a while before it hits the market by mid to late next year. In the meantime, YouTube Music is a nice perk to see earlier. Buyers considering a new Fossil Gen 6 should also look forward to this rollout, as the device is one of the first Wear OS 2 watches with access.
Wear OS 2 smartwatches are eligible
Not all Wear OS 2 watches get instant access to the new app. The rollout begins with some popular devices and will roll out to more watches later this year. The first wave of approvals includes:
Other Wear OS 2 watches should definitely stay tuned for future rollouts. As soon as your device is authorized, the app will be available in the Google Play Store.
