The headphone jack has become a rare sight on flagship phones, with Asus and Sony being among the few manufacturers launching high-end phones with the 3.5mm connector. Otherwise, brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and others have all given up on their flagships.
However, we still see it in mid-ranger and low-end devices, which makes for a welcome sight and a rare opportunity where cheaper phones offer something that flagships lack. Still, we wanted to find out if Android authority Readers still have a headphone jack on their smartphones. This is how you voted in this poll.
Does your current phone have a headphone jack?
Results
The poll was released on June 16 and at the time of writing it had counted a total of over 7,700 votes. This gives us a tremendous sample size to work with, and the end results show that almost two thirds of those surveyed still have a 3.5mm port on their phone.
That might come as a surprise to some, given that most flagships are leaving the standard, but it’s an understandable result. Budget phones are the real volume drivers in the smartphone industry, and devices in this segment generally keep the headphone jack. So it’s more likely that the average consumer has a phone hooked up.
Connected: The best smartphones with a headphone jack
Many enthusiasts have also previously expressed their displeasure that manufacturers are abandoning the standard. And the comments show that the poll attracted those votes too. Some readers said they wouldn’t buy a phone without a 3.5mm connector.
However, 38.7% of respondents said that their current device does not lack a headphone jack. Comments suggest that the lack of the port was either a non-factor or that users resented the omission but bought their device anyway.
Remarks
- DBS: It does, and the lack of a headphone jack is enough for me to NOT buy a phone. It’s a non-negotiable feature.
- Glenn Hughes: I don’t buy a phone without a headphone jack. The irony is that most “flagship” phones don’t have them, so I’ll be using a Pixel 4a when I would have liked to have spent more on a higher-end device
- Paul Russell: Yes and no. I have two newspapers, one has an audio connection and one does not. However, I never use it, I am always wireless with my MX3s. So I voted no in the poll
- Painfully_Candid: As a musician, I use the headphone jack quite often. When I need to run music through our sound system I don’t want to look from a dumb dongle – we already have various devices in our system that use headphone jacks so it’s easy and convenient to plug our phones in. When I practice drums, I plug my cell phone into the line-in of my drums almost every day so I can play along. Removing this port in phones is a poor choice.
- David L: My current cell phone, a Samsung S20 FE 5G, lacks a headphone jack. It’s a big nuisance. All of my previous phones had one.
- Gianluca Di Maggio: It’s clear to see that it’s still a very popular feature. So many phones don’t sell anymore and yet the majority of consumers still have a headphone jack.
- fixedgrin: I currently use two devices that have headphone jacks and LED notification displays. I’m starting to suspect that the lack of the latter in most modern phones poses a severely underestimated threat to ergonomics.
- DigitalBenny: Don’t have it. Don’t use it. Dont miss it.
- Sony Xperia 1 II baby! Do you want to know a secret? I don’t even use it that much lol. But when I do, IT IS THERE!
