Last year, the first phone with a selfie camera under the display was launched as ZTE was the first to commercially offer this technology. The biggest problem with this first generation version was that the image quality was far below that of traditional selfie cameras.
More phones with this technology are in sight and we’re not entirely sure what to expect from these devices in terms of picture quality. But what quality would you accept to buy a phone with a selfie camera under the display? We asked readers that last week, and here are the results.
What would it take to buy a selfie camera phone under the display?
Results
Most voters don’t necessarily want new under-display cameras to blow traditional selfie shooters out of the water. About 57% of readers would buy such a phone if the quality of the selfie camera was the same as the current selfie cameras on phones. Only 13.8% of readers are waiting for a major quality breakthrough.

For 18% of readers, quality is irrelevant. You would still buy a phone with a camera under the display. After all, almost 11% of voters say that they would accept an image quality that is “slightly worse” than current selfie shooters.

- Albin: The only selfie cam innovation that ever interested me was the pop-out, which remained buried until it was wanted, immune to snoopers and did not cover the screen. REST IN PEACE.
- Ski Karterking: This is a technology no one asks about, and it’s just an excuse to raise prices.
- Evie: Price. As long as it can be used for face unlocking and is not noticeable, I’ll be there. I can’t remember the last time I used my selfie camera.
- Wongwatt: I would buy one to get an uninterrupted display on a waterproof device. I don’t take selfies, but I do video chat so it should be reasonably good. In all fairness, resetting the bezels solves all of these problems without inventing anything.
- jdrch: Works at eye level for me.
- TheOracle: My daily driver is the original Vivo Nex S, and I bought it specifically for the full screen. Almost 3 years later, the pop-up camera is still fine, even though I almost never use the damn thing. As soon as a decent under-display camera phone is available at a reasonable price and with the right specs, I’ll buy it.
