Xiaomi’s first under-display camera phone
Xiaomi’s Mi Mix series is a remarkable trailblazer focused on bringing chic designs to the table. Almost three years have passed since the last commercially available Mix product, but Xiaomi is finally back with the Mi Mix 4.
Perhaps the biggest selling point is the switch to a 20 MP selfie camera under the display (0.8 micron pixels and 1.6 micron pixel binning), which is the first Xiaomi phone to feature this technology. This may be the first Xiaomi device to have a selfie camera under the display, but the brand says this is actually the third generation of the technology.
Xiaomi adds that in the screen area above the camera it still offers 400 pixels per square inch, matching the rest of the display. This should go some way to reducing the haze effect we’ve seen with first-generation devices like the ZTE Axon 20. Otherwise, the company says it is reducing the diffraction of light in selfie photos and videos through new circuit design, transparent wiring, and software algorithms.
The company also offers a ceramic back, which represents a welcome move away from glass and a return to devices like the Mi Mix 2. The phone is available in Ceramic Black, Ceramic White and Ceramic Gray color options.
What’s in the Mi Mix 4?
This new Mi Mix device has some good core specs otherwise and features a Snapdragon 888 Plus processor, 6.67-inch FHD + curved OLED screen (HDR10 +, Gorilla Glass Victus), 8GB to 12GB of RAM and 128 GB / 256 GB / 512 GB storage.
The Mi Mix 4 also offers a 4,500 mAh battery with 120 W wired charging and 50 W wireless charging. By default, the phone can be fully charged in 21 minutes via wired charging and 45 minutes via wireless charging. Xiaomi also advertises a so-called boost mode, which offers wired and wireless charging times of 15 minutes and 28 minutes, respectively. This faster charging mode is likely to result in increased battery degradation over time, but taking it as an option instead of the standard or single choice is a pretty reasonable approach.

Xiaomi’s new flagship also has a flexible rear-view camera system with a 108-megapixel main camera with OIS (Isocell HMX, 0.8 micron, 1.6-micron pixel binning), a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (free-form lens, 120-degree Field of view) and an 8MP 5X periscope shooter with OIS.
Another notable addition to the Mi Mix 4 is the use of UWB technology with “point-to-connect” functions. The company says you can point your phone to any compatible Xiaomi smart home product to connect to your phone right away.
The Mi Mix 4 also gets some software extras such as real-time subtitles and translations on the device, a SIM lock feature (which requires a password to use a new SIM card with the device) and a shutdown prevention feature . Other notable features include two stereo speakers, an IP53 rating for splash protection, an IR blaster, and NFC.
