Xiaomi want to know if you’ll buy a $1,500 phone from the company
- Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, wants to know from fans if they would buy a $ 1,500 phone from the company.
- The executive will discuss the issue on February 7th.
- He could point out the company’s plans for its foldable phone.
Xiaomi has dominated the budget smartphone segment for some time. Even its flagship phones are usually cheaper than what the competition has to offer. But last year the Mi 10 Ultra hit the $ 1,000 mark on the high end, and now it appears that the Chinese company is trying to break that premium price limit.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun asked followers on Weibo if they would buy a 10,000-yuan ($ 1,548) phone from the company. He also asked her what a Xiaomi phone with that price tag should look like.
The question could be an indication of an upcoming expensive Xiaomi device, possibly the company’s first foldable phone that has been in the works for a while. On the other hand, it might just be the company testing the water before deciding to jump into the ultra-premium smartphone segment.
This isn’t the first time Jun has pointed out Xiaomi’s desire to break away from its reputation as a budget smartphone maker. The company even started selling its Mi 10 flagship in India last year, signaling that it is ready to try its luck in the premium arena, in a country where it’s strong market share is on the back of Entry-level devices.
However, we expect to hear more about Xiaomi’s plans for overpriced phones on Feb.7, when Jun Mi appeals to fans for the Chinese New Year. Until then, let us know what you think of his question.
