Xiaomi Mi Mix 2021 will be the first smartphone to pack a liquid lens

Xiaomi is launching a new Mi Mix on March 29th and the company has started testing some of its unique features. Interestingly, the latest Mi Mix will sport a liquid lens, a first in the smartphone world.
A liquid lens contains an optical quality liquid and is controlled either mechanically or electronically. In contrast to conventional rigid lenses, liquid lenses are tensile and can change the focal length quickly. They also take up less space compared to traditional lenses.
According to Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, the company’s self-developed liquid lens is controlled by a motor in order to achieve precise and fast focusing. The flowable liquid that makes up the lens is wrapped in a film that allows the focal length and focus to be changed quickly.
Xiaomi compares it to how the human eye sees. The rate of deformation of the liquid lens is much faster than that of the mechanical control of a conventional optical lens, according to Xiaomi, which significantly improves the focusing speeds.
Jun also revealed that the lens would allow both macro and telephoto shots.
In addition, Xiaomi claims that the optical liquid has high light transmittance, extremely low dispersion and resistance to extreme environments.
