Xiaomi has announced a new concept phone with a portless design with no buttons or other openings.
The star of the show here is the new “Quad-Curved Waterfall Display”. According to the company, it creates an 88-degree curve on all four sides of the phone without creating any frames or frames.
To create the unique display, Xiaomi used glass processing equipment that it had developed itself, a hot bending process at 800 degrees, four different polishing tools and more than ten complex polishing processes.
It is very similar to Vivo’s Apex concept phone, which first introduced a portless design in 2019. The only difference is that the Apex phone’s screen curves on the left and right edges, while the display of the new Xiaomi concept phone also offers curves above and below.
Elsewhere, the new concept phone from Xiaomi features third-generation sub-display camera technology, where the screen extends to the edges and there is no space for a pop-up module. It also includes wireless charging capabilities, eSIM support, and pressure sensitive touch sensors.
The company claims to have 46 technical patents covering the entire machine.
Xiaomi Portless Concept Phone: is it practical?
It is unlikely that Xiaomi will put such a design into production anytime soon. For once, we don’t think the world is ready for portless phones that lack things like a SIM tray, volume buttons, microSD card slots, and other important hardware attributes.
We’re not fans of waterfall displays either. They are more prone to breakage and don’t adapt well to content. Not to mention unwanted wrong touches that can lead to misfires on the phone.
Take our survey and give us your opinion on the new concept phone from Xiaomi.
