Wonder Woman 1984 will debut on HBO Max Christmas Day, but there’s a catch

Wonder Woman 1984

  • Wonder Woman 1984 will make its official debut on December 25th.
  • The long-awaited superhero sequel to DC Comics is coming to theaters and on HBO Max in the United States.
  • Subscribers to the streaming service can watch the film at no additional cost, but only for one month.

Christmas Day is going to be a big day for streaming movie fans. Warner Bros. has announced that its long-awaited superhero sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, will debut in the US on December 25th on HBO Max. The film will also be released in American cinemas, or at least in open theaters, on the same day. The film will actually be released in overseas theaters on December 16.

This release strategy has a catch, however. In the Warner Bros. press release, the studio said that Wonder Woman will be available to HBO Max subscribers just a month after its release in 1984. Presumably, the film will return to streaming service later in 2021 following its theater and PVOD / Blu-Ray / DVD timeframes.

The sequel to the hit 2017 film has seen more than a release date delay. It was originally scheduled to hit theaters in late 2019, then it was postponed to June 2020. However, due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, the film became one of many to postpone its release date until October 2020 and eventually until December 25th.

However, it looks like Warner Bros. realized that the US COVID-19 crisis is not going to go away anytime soon. So it was decided to give people the chance to watch Wonder Woman at home on HBO Max in 1984.

The film itself is co-written and directed by Patty Jenkins, who also directed the first Wonder Woman film. Gal Gadot returns as the almost immortal Amazon warrior Diana, who hides in our world after the events of the first film in decades. However, when a mysterious man named Maxwell Lord tells the world that he can give anyone what he wants, things get complicated. Chris Pine also returns as Steve Trevor and Kristen Wiig plays one of Wonder Woman’s greatest enemies, Cheetah.

Competition with Disney Plus?

The 1984 release of Wonder Woman on HBO Max in the US coincides with another major movie launching on a competing platform. Soul, the latest animation feature from Disney’s Pixar studio, will also be unveiled on December 25th on the Disney Plus streaming service.

The 1984 launch of Wonder Woman and Soul on streaming platforms will close an extraordinary 2020 in the film industry. The COVID-19 outbreak, which began in March, resulted in a lot of major film releases delaying their launch either until 2021 or later, as most cinemas closed or their films started via streaming services. These include Artemis Fowl, Hamilton and Mulan on Disney Plus, and Scoob and The Witches on HBO Max.
