On Sunday, over 136,000 new cases of coronavirus were reported to WHO, most in a single day, largely due to outbreaks in America and South Asia.

“Although the situation in Europe is improving, it is deteriorating worldwide,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General, during a press conference on Monday. Tedros also found that over 100,000 cases were reported on nine of the last 10 days, with over 75% of new cases coming from only 10 countries.

The situation report for Sunday shows a large part of the new cases from the USA, Brazil, India and Pakistan. The organization’s official list of coronavirus cases is approaching 7 million with over 400,000 deaths. According to a database of cases compiled by Johns Hopkins University, over 3 million have recovered.

Although cases continue to grow, optimism is growing in some regions of the world. On Monday, New Zealand announced that it is free of corona viruses, with his last active case recovering. It will continue to keep its borders closed, but restrictions across the country have now been lifted. The Director General recognized this type of success, but warned: “Complacency is the greatest threat now.”

“More than six months after this pandemic, this is not the time for a country to take its foot off the pedal,” said Tedros. “This is the time for countries to continue working hard on the basis of science, solutions and solidarity.

Tedros also devoted itself to addressing Protests around the world Fight against police brutality and systemic racism. U.S. protesters are demanding justice for Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and Tony McDade – four black people killed in 2020 in hate crimes or law enforcement.

“WHO fully supports equality and the global movement against racism,” Tedros said during the briefing. “We reject discrimination of any kind. We encourage everyone who protests around the world to do so safely.”
