When does the third season of Doom Patrol begin?

HBO Max will air the third season of Doom Patrol with the first three episodes on September 23. The rest of the new episodes are released every week. Based on the season 3 teaser trailer, the series will break up its giant cliffhanger. It will also introduce viewers to a few more characters from Doom Patrol’s comic book history. These include the brain (a living human brain in a cylinder) and Monsieur Mallah (a large French-speaking gorilla). Actress Michelle Gomez (Doctor Who, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) will also appear as Madame Rouge in the season.

The series is based on a rather obscure superhero comic book from DC Comics compared to Superman, Batman, Justice League or Suicide Squad. The title refers to a team of rather quirky supermen who describe themselves as outcasts and freaks rather than hero characters. They are brought together by a man named The Chief to fight evil supermen. The first incarnation of the Doom Patrol team was created by writers Arnold Drake and Bob Haney and drawn by artist Bruno Premiani. The team debuted in one of DC Comics’ anthology titles, My Greatest Adventure, for issue 80 in 1963. The team later received their own self-titled comic.

Since its first appearance, different incarnations of the Doom Patrol team have been created by different writers and artists. However, the TV show is mainly inspired by the Doom Patrol series, written by Grant Morrison and drawn mainly by Richard Case. This creative team’s run on the second volume of Doom Patrol from 1989 to 1993 (issues 19-63) rocked the status quo of comics. Morrison and Case brought elements of magical realism and surrealism to their stories and characters, along with parodies of other popular comics of the time.

What is the TV show about?

The TV series was developed by showrunner Jeremy Carver. He worked as a writer, producer and later showrunner for the popular CW series Supernatural. He also developed the US version of the Being Human series for the Syfy Channel. Previously, an episode of another DC Comics show, Titans, introduced a version of Doom Patrol with some of the same actors who were later cast on the Doom Patrol TV series. However, both shows are considered to be in separate universes and continuities. In other words, you don’t have to check out this Titans episode for your Doom Patrol binge watching.

Regular cast members on the current Doom Patrol TV series include:

• the Boss (Dr. Niles Caulder) – Played by Timothy Dalton, The Chief is a doctor with paraplegia. He brings the members of the Doom Patrol together at his mansion to help them with their various problems.
• Jane – Jane is played by Diane Guerrero and has 64 different personalities. However, each personality has its own super ability.
• Rubber Girl (Rita Farr) – Played from April Bowlby, Rita can change her body shape. However, she also occasionally has problems holding her body tight.
• Negative Man (Larry Trainor) – Voiced by Matt Bomer and physically played by Matthew Zuk, Larry is a retired Air Force pilot. Once, while he was flying his jet, his body was taken over by a negative spirit being. Larry needs to connect his whole body to prevent the radiation of the mind from affecting others.
• Robot Man (Cliff Steele) – Voiced by Brendan Fraser and physically played by Riley Shanahan, Cliff is a retired racing driver who gets into a terrible car accident. His brain is still alive, but in a robotic body.
• Cyborg (Vic Stone) – Cyborg, played by Joivan Wade, is perhaps the best-known character in this cast due to his high profile appearance in the big budget film Justice League from a few years ago. In his Doom Patrol version, the man with predominantly cybernetic components is not yet a member of the Justice League. However, Vic joins the Doom Patrol because of his previous friendship with The Chief.

Season 1 of Doom Patrol debuted on the DC Universe streaming service in 2019. Without giving much away, the team takes on the villain Mr. Nobody, played by Alan Tudyk, in season one, and team members learn some secrets the Chief has kept away from them. Season two debuted on both DC Universe and HBO Max as the team deal with a new and unexpected member who has very close ties to The Chief. Season two ends with a huge, previously unplanned cliffhanger as the creative team had to end the season prematurely due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Warner Bros has since retired the DC Universe streaming service, but you can now stream both seasons of Doom Patrol on HBO Max.
