WhatsApp enables voice and video calling on desktop

WhatsApp desktop calling function

  • WhatsApp has voice and video calling enabled on the desktop.
  • The service is only available through the WhatsApp desktop app.
  • Group calls are not currently supported.

WhatsApp has finally added the ability to make voice and video calls from the desktop. You can now make calls from your WhatsApp Windows or Mac app to your contacts on the platform.

WhatsApp desktop calls are supported on Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 or higher and macOS 10.13 or newer. The service does not work in WhatsApp Web, which can be accessed through Internet browsers.

WhatsApp has also made sure that viewing works seamlessly in both portrait and landscape mode. Calls appear in a self-contained resizable window on your computer screen that is set to always be on top.

How do I use the function?

To make or receive calls on WhatsApp desktop, you need a microphone and camera on your computer. You can use the built-in hardware of your PC or connect external devices.

Calls are handled through the Internet connection on your PC, not your phone. However, according to WhatsApp, your phone must also be connected to the internet.

Unfortunately, group calling is not currently supported, but the platform says it will add the feature in the future.

WhatsApp addresses privacy concerns and writes on its blog that voice and video calls on WhatsApp are encrypted throughout.
