The Haunted Bly Manor (October 9th)
The Haunting of Hill House was one of the scariest TV shows of 2018. Now the producers of this Shirley Jackson adaptation are back with yet another Haunted House story. This time it’s a loose adaptation of The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. The Haunting of Bly Manor takes place in the present. A governess was hired to look after two children who live in a very large and empty house. Strange things start to happen right away. Many of the same actors from The Haunting of Hill House, including Henry Thomas, are returning for The Haunting of Bly Manor and playing different roles.
Rebecca (October 21)
Daphne Du Maurier’s 1938 Gothic novel has been adapted several times, including the acclaimed 1940 film version directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This new version of the film shows Armie Hammer and Lily James as a newly married couple. They begin their new life together with a stay in Hammer’s old house on the coast of England. The problem with James’ character is that the house still seems to be haunted by Hammer’s first wife, Rebecca.
The Chicago 7 Trial (October 16)
Aaron Sorkin, the creator of TV shows like The West Wing and The Newsroom, makes his return to politics by writing and directing this fact-based film. During the National Democratic Convention of 1968, protesters fought with both the Chicago police and the National Guard. The organizers of the protest were arrested and charged with trying to cause a riot. This film focuses on the trial against these organizers and how that trial became a wake-up call for many people in the United States. The cast includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, Eddie Redmayne and Jeremy Strong.
Holidate (October 28)
Netflix kicks off the holiday season a little earlier this year with this festive movie. Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey play individuals who never seem to be very lucky with Christmas. After a chance encounter, however, they vow to be each other’s platonic “holidate”, as they will take part in each other’s various party events over the next year. However, when their year-long pact comes to an end, they realize that they could actually be more than just friends.
