What are What3words?

What3words is a universal language that simplifies navigation by assigning 3 word address to every place on earth. This eliminates any confusion about which direction you need to go because What3words allows you to share location your destination using just three easy-to-remember words.

What makes What are What’s special is that every 3 word address represents a precise location somewhere on the earth. What can I use What for? Imagine being able to pinpoint your exact destination rather than having to rely on longitude and latitude coordinates or directions like “turn left at Starbucks” which only works if you know exactly where it is.

How does What work?

We all have memorable places in our lives, be they addresses of houses we lived in growing up, childhood holiday destinations, bank branches or favorite restaurants. A familiar memory gives us an easy reference point from which to give someone else clear instructions about how to get there by road – something most people would find quite intuitive even without knowing detailed geographical information such as street names etc.

What What does is take this idea and apply it to any location. What are What’s? The What system consists of 57 trillion three-word combinations. Each unique word combination relates only to one point on the globe, identified by its latitude and longitude coordinates – no place can be found at just any other place.

How do I use What?

Once you’ve shared your destination with someone else they simply type in what words were given for that location into their phone app or website browser (e.g.: “restaurant overpopulated obnoxiously loud nonconformist”) which immediately returns a precise spatial reference pinpointing where you need to go – down to an average house door! What is the future of Where and How?

The world has a problem with overpopulation – by 2050 there will be around 11.23 billion people on earth, more than double what it was just 60 years ago. In areas where navigation systems are broken or nonexistent, populations have been forced to rely on outdated paper maps which no longer reflect new development in many countries such as China.

This lack of clear communication between humans often results in miscommunication that can cause frustration, inconvenience and even danger for those traveling through these locations without smartphones or reliable data connections (which excludes most rural Third World regions). We want everyone to know exactly where they’re going at any time — whether they’re in the middle of a city or lost in the wilderness. What What is currently being used as a pilot project by The Red Cross to direct refugees to their allocated campsites, and we are also working with them on mapping out facilities such as toilets and water points.

What has partnered up with Mercedes-Benz Vans to provide directions for drivers in real time, using the vans’ built-in GPS systems. This will be especially useful for those who don’t know their way around an unfamiliar city, or need help getting to a specific destination that’s not easily accessible by public transport. All you need to do is enter your starting point and final destination into the What app, and it will give you What’s to the precise What you need.

It is easy enough these days with Google Maps but imagine if there was no Internet connection available – how would someone reach you under those circumstances? What emergency services are available in your area?

The emergency services in my area are police, ambulance and fire. They are all manned by the same people but each service has its own role to play when needed.

For example, if there is a fire, the emergency services will attend the scene of the fire to try to control it, evacuate people if necessary and deal with the aftermath. If someone has been injured, the ambulance service will attend and take them to hospital. And if there has been a crime, the police will attend and investigate.
