Under-display cameras could become a mainstay in future phone design as more and more OEMs adopt the technology. While ZTE is leading the advance with the Axon series, Samsung could soon follow suit. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 are said to be the first Samsung devices to sink the selfie camera. Xiaomi and Google have also filed patents for their own under-display camera designs.

The advantages of under-display cameras are obvious. An uninterrupted display with minimal bezels is the design dream. A camera under the screen also eliminates the need for moving camera parts such as a pop-up or flip-around housing.

Despite these obvious advantages, the real problem with these recessed cameras is image quality. When looking through the display, these shooters cannot yet keep up with conventional selfie shooters. For some, this could be the biggest problem. For others, this is likely a negligible factor.
