Today’s premium smartphones usually have at least three types of rear view cameras on board, namely the main camera, ultra wide angle and tele / periscope snapper. This allows for a lot of flexibility and offers the user a camera for almost every occasion.
We’ve also seen flagship phones add a fourth camera to the mix, but it seems the industry doesn’t quite agree on what type of camera to use. What do you think the fourth camera should be on flagship phones? Give us your answer using the survey below.
A trend in recent years has been the addition of a second tele / periscope camera as a fourth sensor. We have seen Xiaomi, Huawei, and Samsung all take this approach, delivering a short-range telephoto camera, as well as a long-range telephoto or periscope shooter.
We’ve also seen OnePlus, Huawei, and Honor use a monochrome camera as a fourth sensor that allows for true black and white shooting and better shooting in low light. Another significant trend was the trend towards 3D-ToF or depth sensors as the fourth camera on high-end smartphones, which enable more precise depth effects and pictures in portrait mode.

Oppo may have taken the cake for the weirdest fourth camera to date on a smartphone, as the Find X3 Pro brings a 3MP microscope camera to the table. This goes even closer than macro cameras and allows you to take microscope style pictures as the name suggests.
In any case, make sure to make yourself heard through the above survey. You can also leave a comment if you chose the “other” option or if you simply have more to say.
