WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy is causing a stir. The platform’s new Terms of Use, which will be released in February, urge users to allow Facebook parents to share their personal information with their affiliates. What is shocking to many is the level of data sharing, including phone numbers, IP addresses, and other personal identifiers.
While people in the EU will be able to opt out of the new privacy standards, WhatsApp users in the rest of the world will have to comply with them in order to continue using the service after February 8th. Ad targeting seems to be the ultimate goal of these Revised Terms, though Facebook says most of the sharing is meant to improve the integration and security of its products.
In the wake of these developments, many companies are reportedly advising their employees to remove WhatsApp for work-related communications. A dealer organization in India, WhatsApp’s largest market, is also calling for government intervention to prevent the new terms from taking effect.
Meanwhile, competing platforms like Signal and Telegram are seeing a surge in demand from those looking for a more private messaging experience.
