TikTok escapes ban again, big week ahead, and more tech news you need to know

1. The TikTok Saga Continues (Part IV)
Sorry (again) but the TikTok saga continues and continues with the events on Sunday evening that mark the start of the week.
At least the latest is pretty simple: When a ban came into effect banning new TikTok downloads, a US judge temporarily blocked White House executive order (Reuters).
- Four hours before the ban began, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols issued an injunction requested by ByteDance, which means the app will remain in the U.S. app stores.
- The judge’s reasoning has been sealed but is expected to be published this morning. The current order can be read via DocumentCloud.
- What we do know is that “at this point” Nichols has declined to add any more blocks, including potential tighter trade department restrictions that will go into effect on November 12th.
- The same type of block allowed WeChat to continue working normally.
- So, fair hearings in US courts for companies based in China. (Judge Nichols was nominated by President Trump, h / t WSJ, last year).
What’s next?
- It’s a short-term win, but the deal with Oracle and Walmart may still come off.
- The U.S. Foreign Investment Committee has yet to approve the deal, including controlling ownership issues, what ownership means and what part of TikTok will be sold.
- In the meantime, the Chinese government could stop any deal that meets all of the US criteria.
- In better news … it can’t go on forever, can it?
