Tiger King: 8 ways to get more of Netflix’s wildly popular documentary
Good news for viewers Tiger King: murder, chaos and madness and want more of the crazy Netflix show. It seems that anyone who’s ever crossed paths with one of the stars of Tiger King is producing some form of new content, playing on the massive success of the streaming show.
The shot Netflix series (spoilers ahead) focuses on Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka Joe Exotic, and his park of exotic animals in Oklahoma. It begins brilliantly curly, with Joe mule-sporting marrying two men at the same time in a bright pink marriage, before exploding in a stormy quarrel between Joe and Carole Baskin, the owner of a large cat sanctuary – leading to a conspiracy to murder on the account. The constantly heightened madness of each episode provided a much-needed distraction for many around the world coronavirus epidemic.
But if you’ve seen it all and have a cat scratch fever for more, take heart: there may be more great catitude ahead. Here are eight ways to get more from Tiger King.
Watch the after-show
Tiger King had seven original episodes, but on April 12, Netflix provided an additional installment of Tiger King content. Instead of a traditional episode directed by directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, the eighth episode is an after-show, that kind of oh-so-meta TV series that talks about another TV show.
Actor and actor Joel McHale hosts the new episode, which is called The Tiger King and I. Spoiler: Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin do not appear (he’s in prison, she’s not interested), but many other park staff, past and present, meet up with McHale to recount their strange years in the Joe universe. If you have Netflix, this episode should be in your stream by now.
Connect to the special FOX / TMZ
Monday at 9 p.m. PT, Fox is broadcasting a special episode of TMZ Investigates dedicated to Joe Exotic, entitled Tiger King: What Really Went Down?
The hour-long show promises “new footage, exclusive interviews and shocking revelations”, all of which seem to be endless when it comes to this case.
Hope for season 2 of the Netflix series
The seven regular Netflix episodes end with Joe Exotic himself behind bars in federal prison for plotting to kill his rival, Baskin. He’s still there, though the colorful figures that surrounded Joe are scattered to the wind – click here for updates on many of them. But the story is not over.
“We have a crazy amount of footage and it’s a story that is always going on,” said director Rebecca Chaiklin. told Entertainment Weekly. “We are not sure yet, but there could be a follow-up on this story because there are a lot of things going on in it and it will be just as dramatic and just as colorful as what happened these last years.”
Wait for the spectacle of the real crime
Joe Exotic and his world are too bizarre to be limited to a single TV show. Investigation Discovery announced on April 6 that another Joe show was in the works. The ID program, Investigating the Strange World of Joe Exotic, promises to dig secrets from the past of Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin, Jeff Lowe and Doc Antle, with exclusive images that have never been shown.
The show also promises to find out if Baskin is responsible for the disappearance of her husband, Don Lewis, in 1997. Joe Exotic has repeatedly stated on the show, and Baskin has publicly denied any knowledge of what happened. to Lewis. An ID representative said the show would be a limited series, and although there is no exact date, the network says it will air in 2020.
Listen to the podcast
Netflix filmmakers weren’t the only ones working for years to tell this fascinating and bizarre story. You can listen to a podcast on the same subject. The second season of Wondery’s Over My Dead Body podcast is called Joe Exotic: Tiger King and written, told and reported by Robert Moor, who worked for years on the podcast. (Don’t miss Moor’s New York magazine article on Joe from September 2019 too.)
Unlike the Netflix series, the podcast always provides fresh content. New episodes come out on Tuesday, and the podcast also shares bonus episodes, including interviews with members of the Joe universe, including Baskin and Joe’s former romantic partner, John Finlay.
Help launch the miniseries
Because a successful entertainment series can spread to other media as quickly as a tiger can jump on a pair of cologne-soaked shoes, the podcast was chosen by NBC Universal to be turned into a mini -series. So far, the only actor announced is Saturday Night Live actress Kate McKinnon, who will play Baskin and serve as executive producer. A McKinnon representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Moor told Andy Cohen that he would like to see Margot Robbie play Joe Exotic in a sex change role. “Look at her eyes, she has eyes that look like Joe’s,” he says. “I think she would do a great job with that.” Moor said he would like to see John C. Reilly as Doc Antle, the founder of a South Carolina wildlife reserve who also plays a role in the podcast and Netflix show. Moor invited listeners to tweet made suggestionsand Bonnie Burton of CNET came up with his own casting ideas.
Watch David Spade’s Videos
Actor David Spade fell into the rabbit hole Joe Exotic and did a number of video interviews with people who appeared in the series. Until this second season or additional episode occurs, the Spade videos are almost like short bonus episodes and a Tiger King fan should definitely watch them.
So far Spade has interviewed Joe’s ex-partner John Finlay; former zoo director John reinke; Jeff Lowe, which has taken over the animal park; and former park employee Kelci “Saff” Saffery. Spade is not just a fan, he continues to be offered as a member of the Joe Exotic miniseries. Furthermore, his role as Joe Dirt in the 2001 comedy proved that the man knows his way around a mule.
Listen to Rick Kirkham’s livestream
Viewers of Tiger King likely remember Rick Kirkham, the former Inside Edition reporter who was filming Joe Exotic for his own documentary, then lost all of his footage when a fire broke out in Joe’s zoo. Kirkham, who now lives in Norway, spilled more information about Joe’s crazy universe in a special live moderated by the Norwegian journalist Per Sundnes.
The livestream is not live now: it premiered on Saturday April 11. But if you’re willing to pay between $ 3.99 and $ 4.99 to watch Kirkham’s show (cost varies by country), you can still login.
The two-hour special show features Kirkham and Sundnes talking about Kirkham’s bizarre days with Joe Exotic, and features video footage and questions from viewers. Warning: the livestream of Kirkham has some rough moments. He discusses many cases of animal cruelty and shows bloody pictures of the damaged arm and hand of Kelci “Saff” Saffery after the tiger attack shown in the Netflix series. But some of the topics in the stream are lighter, such as discussions about Joe’s mule, political campaigns, and his attempts by Milli Vanilli for a career in country music.
