This week in Android: Android 11 is live, Surface Duo review, OnePlus 8 giveaway

Android 11 is live! But at first, Microsoft’s new Surface Duo wasn’t well received by phone reviewers, and it’s getting tougher for Huawei.

No wonder the trade bans imposed on Huawei continue to make life difficult for the Chinese company. The US has made it clear that doing business with Huawei is not a smart move and we are sad to see the lingering effects of that. This week it was reported that Samsung and LG will no longer ship displays to Huawei. That means the brand is missing Google software, missing chipsets, and now missing displays. Huawei will have a hard time for the foreseeable future.

Samsung and LG discontinue display supply for Huawei

The Microsoft Surface Duo is an exciting device. Two displays are connected to one another by a thin hinge that can be swiveled 360 degrees. When closed, there is no screen available, as is the case with the Samsung Galaxy Fold, for example. When it’s open, you can use it in different orientations and layouts with multiple apps running at the same time. It’s a really cool design that promises to be a great pocket computer. However, if it is rated as a phone, as most of the reviewers have so far, it isn’t that great. One-handed operation is almost a no-go, the camera can’t keep up with modern flagship phones, and the battery life, which offers around 5 hours of screen time, is considered just average.

It comes with a last-gen SoC, just 6GB of RAM, and limited storage, although it lacks a number of features that we’ve come to appreciate on our mobile devices, but it’s a new form factor that we applaud Microsoft for their commitment. We hope that future versions of these types of foldable mobile devices can bring it all together, at a price slightly below what is currently on offer.
