While these types of masks help contain the virus, they have significant shortcomings. They do not filter out small air particles, have to be washed regularly and are not well ventilated. They also make it impossible to unlock your phone with facial recognition.

Huami hopes to solve most of these problems with the Amazfit Aeri mask. It comes with removable air filters and has integrated UV lamps. If you connect the mask to a USB-C plug for a few minutes, it can disinfect itself after each use. According to a Huami spokesman, each filter would be effective for a month and a half. This is much longer than the current eight hours for which N95 masks are good. (Note that N95 is a specification Specified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure that the mask blocks 95% of all particles. It is not clear whether Huami wants to use this name.)

The Aeri mask is also made of transparent anti-fog material so that enough facial features are visible to unlock your phone using facial recognition technologies like Face ID. And the modular structure would allow various accessories such as eye protection or a fan to be accommodated, which would make training with a face mask a little less choking.

The company is currently prototyping its Aeri masks, but said the launch is expected to take anywhere from six months to a year. Although it is too early to price, Huami’s spokesman said the company is striving to make it as “affordable” as the other Amazfit products. The company’s Amazfit Bip smartwatch costs $ 80, which is less than half the price of similar Fitbit, Samsung, and Apple smartwatches.
