  • A new report outlines the performance of smartphone brands in each region of the world.
  • Samsung continued to lead in most regions, while Apple was the most dominant in its home market.

2020 has been a tough year for smartphone companies, and the shipping numbers prove it. While some firms weathered the storm and, in some cases, grew exponentially, others continued to fall into the pecking order. The new report from Counterpoint goes further into the performance of smartphone brands in 2020 in the different regions.

While Samsung, Apple, and Huawei led global smartphone market shares, these three companies faced mixed fortunes in certain regions.

The top smartphone brands in every region

North America was led by Apple by Counterpoint, with Samsung taking second and LG third. Apple was so dominant in this region in 2020 that roughly every second smartphone sold was an iPhone.

Apple was unable to create charts in the MEA region. Although Samsung was a leader in this corner of the world, companies like Tecno and Itel continued to have a larger market share (15% together) than companies like Xiaomi (6%).

Samsung dominated LATAM and Europe, accounting for 41% and 32% of the market share in these regions, respectively. Xiaomi’s massive growth in Europe also made it possible to overthrow Huawei.

After all, Asia remains Huawei’s only stronghold, but its rivals are breathing down his neck. While the Chinese company holds 19% of the continent’s market share, Vivo (15%), Xiaomi (14%), Oppo (14%) and Samsung (11%) keep winning.

Despite the 25% year-over-year drop in shipments in 2020, the feature phone market continued to be led by Itel, with HMD and Tecno rounding off the top 3.
