What is the TV series The Wheel of Time about?

The wheel of time is a series of fantasy novels by the American author Robert Jordan, launched in 1990 and posthumously completed by Brandon Sanderson. Originally planned as a six-part series, The Wheel of Time consists of 14 main novels as well as a prequel novel, several short stories and two companion books.

The books are set in a nameless world, although fans know them as Randlands or World of the Wheel. The story is about an ancient battle between the forces of light and the forces of darkness. An order of women known as the Aes Sedai who wields magic fights the servants of the evil dark. Both sides are looking for a reborn dragon who could change the balance of power to defeat the dark one. Young potential reincarnations are on the run but are working to unite kingdoms against the evil forces that are hunting them down.

The TV series Wheel of Time will reportedly follow this plot pretty closely.

Amazon describes the series as follows: “The story takes place in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists and only certain women are allowed to access Sedai when she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There she embarks on a dangerous, global journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied as the reborn dragon who will either save or destroy humanity. “

It’s not yet clear whether the show will stick to only the first book in the series. The eye of the world, or contain elements from various novels and short films.

The TV series Wheel of Time is streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories worldwide.

The first three episodes are scheduled to premiere on November 19th, and the following episodes will be rolled out weekly on Fridays from then on.

Amazon has already confirmed a second season.

Given the huge budget and early buzz around the first season – as well as the source material from 15 books – it’s probably fair to expect future seasons beyond that as well.

Has COVID-19 affected the TV series The Wheel of Time?

Filming was well advanced in Prague when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The global public health crisis affected virtually every aspect of life, including film and television production.

The Wheel of Time joins a variety of shows such as Apple TV Plus ‘The Morning Show, HBO Max’s Gossip Girl, Hulus’ The Handmaid’s Tale, Netflix’s Grace & Frankie, FX’s Y: The Last Man, and others that are making production due to the pandemic.

What to Expect

The bestselling fantasy book series has never been adapted for film or television before, so this will be uncharted territory up to a point.

However, there were numerous Wheel of Time video games and comics, and even a soundtrack inspired by the books. Despite several attempts over the past 20 years, previous series and films simply never made it to the big screen.

The trailer doesn’t offer much information beyond the overall dark and epic tone of the series as a whole. (Though fans of the books will likely recognize a look at certain characters, Ross, the Ring of Tamyrlin, and more.)

Between The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings TV series, Amazon is doing a pretty big game to fill the void that Game of Thrones has left.

Of course, that field could get a little crowded soon with Netflix’s The Witcher and HBO’s future Game of Thrones spinoffs.

You can watch The Wheel of Time when it premieres on November 19th on Amazon Prime Video.
