TL; DR

  • Samsung has announced a new smartphone display technology, the Eco 2 OLED.
  • It is used on the just announced foldable Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
  • Among other things, the new display will help to reduce the phone’s power consumption.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 was announced just a few days ago, but the next-gen foldable phone has even more new technology than we initially thought. Today Samsung Display announced that the phone will be the first to use its new Eco 2 OLED technology, which brings several benefits to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Eco stands for E.efficient performance CoRecording + E.friendly Component, for those who score at home.

In a press release, Samsung Display stated that the Eco 2 OLED eliminates the need for a plastic polarizer layer. Usually such a layer is used to help phones reflect external light. However, the same layer also reduces a phone’s light transmission by over 50%.

The new Eco 2 OLED display has its own “innovative pixel structure”. This allows the display to improve its transmission rate on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 by 33%. At the same time, the battery life is up to 25% longer than using a normal OLED display because the phone does not transmit as much light.

The new display technology also improves the performance of the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s 4MP Under-Display Camera (UDC). By removing the polarizer layer, the UDC can be exposed to more light. The result is that such a camera can be built into a foldable phone, giving owners of the phone a true full-screen media experience when not in use.

Since the Eco 2 OLED display doesn’t have this plastic polarizing layer, phones that use this technology can cut all of their plastic consumption for a slightly better phone in terms of environmental impact.

According to Samsung, the Eco 2 OLED display has been patented in seven countries, including the United States. It is safe to say that in the future we can assume that more Samsung smartphones will use this display technology.
