The Pixel 5’s Extreme Battery Saver is coming to older Google phones

  • Google introduced an Extreme Battery Saver feature with the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G.
  • The function stops most apps, slows down your CPU and limits numerous functions.
  • Older pixels will appear over time.

Many phones have battery saving features that can add an hour or two more life to a device. However, Google is going a step further with Pixel phones. In addition to Pixel 5 and 4a 5G, it introduces an Extreme Battery Saver feature that absolutely cannot afford to lose touch with the outside world.

When you turn on Extreme Battery Saver and Android, it pauses most apps (and their notifications), throttles the processor, turns off location searches for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, reduces the screen timeout to 30 seconds, and extras like your work profile and yours Hotspots disabled. This is on top of the existing changes to Battery Saver such as: B. if you lose access to “Hey Google”. You can still pause apps if you need to, but your phone is otherwise much quieter than usual.

Connected: Why is my phone’s battery draining so quickly?

It sounds harsh, but Google promises real profits: The Pixel 5 and 4a 5G should run for up to 48 hours with Extreme Battery Saver active. That can be enough to survive a weekend camping trip or an extended power outage.

Right now, you’ll need one of the two new phones to take advantage of the more aggressive energy saving. However, as with Google Assistant’s Hold for Me, Extreme Battery Saver should carry over to older pixels due to a drop in functionality.

This kind of drastic power saving feature isn’t uncommon elsewhere in the Android world (the endurance mode in Sony phones comes to mind). However, it’s new to Google. Combine it with the bigger batteries in the new Pixels and it’s obvious that Google is taking battery life seriously with this generation.
