The OnePlus 9 should focus on a lower price not new features

This week brought some thirst-quenching news for those who gasped about the flagships of 2021. After the Samsung Galaxy S30 series was spotted in supposedly early renders, the OnePlus 9’s code name was spilled. The phone labeled “Lemonade” is supposed to arrive earlier than normal.

No specific specifications have yet been announced for the Chinese flagship. However, since OnePlus has already confirmed that we will see faster ads on all models in 2021, we wanted to know from readers what else the new series should contain.

To this end, we recently asked you in a survey to choose one of four feature sets that you likely have on your wish list. That’s how you answered.

What would you most like to see from the OnePlus 9 series?

Results

Tallies were surprisingly one-sided, but it’s understandable that readers would vote with their wallets in mind. To this end, 41.1% of readers are not interested in new features but would like the OnePlus 9 series to be cheaper.

That’s a fair request. Sure, the OnePlus 8 was among the cheapest flagships of 2020 at just $ 699, but the OnePlus 8 Pro started at ~ $ 900. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 8T launched for $ 750 and featured a higher refresh rate, faster charge than either model, and an additional rear gate. It wasn’t a major improvement, however. In return, support for wireless charging and the IP rating of the professional have been lost.

OnePlus’ phones are not yet being sold for Samsung and Apple flagships valued at over $ 1,000, but the company, once known for the affordability of its devices, is stepping into that territory with each new version.

The OnePlus 8T also had below average camera performance. We saw this in our review, and it’s a feature set that readers want to fix on the OnePlus 9 series. Around 28% of voters want “first-class cameras” in the company’s next flagship iteration.

“Premium functions” were also at the top of the voters’ wish lists. 23.2% chose this particular option. Users are hoping for the return of an IP rating and wireless charging on the OnePlus 9 line.

After all, only 7.3% of users want “top notch displays” on the flagship, which challenges OnePlus’ focus on display quality and features over other practical features.

Judging by the comments, practical features are exactly what potential buyers crave for too.

Here’s what you had to say

  • John: Smaller form factor, thanks.
  • tjkr: Better cameras, smaller form factor, better GPU and QHD screens for all variants.
In addition, no bloatware and no “later bloatware” promise through updates.
  • AnySmarterIdRunLinux: Basic functions: Large battery; 3.5 mm connector; sdCard in a ~ 6 ″ form factor. These 3 things don’t require R&D $$ and improve everything they’ve ever published. And give him an SD 775 and sell it for $ 599.
  • Ali Afraz:: OnePlus charm was milked to death by those 6 month release windows.
  • Pete Armstrong:: Samsung and OnePlus are already talking about the next phones – too many, too early, and too expensive – for most people!

That’s it for this OnePlus 9 survey. Thank you to everyone who voted and commented on this. If you have any additional comments about the OnePlus 9 series, the rumored window of previous versions, or the survey results, you should fill them in below.
