What is The Mighty Ducks, anyway?
The first film in the trilogy The Mighty Ducks was released in theaters in 1992. Emilio Estevez played Gordon Bombay, a former child hockey player who is now a senior lawyer in Minneapolis. After being arrested for drunk driving, he is sentenced to community service. As a result, Bombay is forced to coach a kids’ hockey team that has never been competitive in its local league. With Bombay’s help, the team that will be renamed the Ducks actually start winning games. In the end, they win the league championship. The film was a huge hit for Disney and spawned two sequels: D2: The Mighty Ducks 1994 and D3: The Mighty Ducks 1996. You can now watch all three films on Disney Plus.
Perhaps the strangest spin-off in the series was a real-life NHL team. Disney owned and started the Mighty Ducks team in Anaheim, California in 1993. The company later sold the team in 2005. However, the current owners still call the team The Anaheim Ducks.
What is the Mighty Ducks Disney Plus TV show about?
The new show is called The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. The Ducks team, playing again in Minneapolis, has grown to become the top team in the local kids’ league over the past decade. However, a mother for one of the players is upset when her son is cut out of The Mighty Ducks. She feels that the ducks are getting too serious and that children should only exercise for fun. She helps organize a new ice hockey team for children who are not natural athletes and recruits a now retired Bombay to coach them.
Who is in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers?
Lauren Graham is starring in the new TV show. She is best known for her roles in the long-running television series Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. She plays Alex, the mother of the 12-year-old boy who is quickly cut off from The Mighty Ducks and later helps found the new ice hockey team. Emilio Estevez returns to play Gordon Bombay. Steven Brill, who wrote or co-wrote the scripts for all three Mighty Ducks films, will return as lead writer for the 10-part Game Changers series.
In addition, Weekly entertainment reports that characters from all three Mighty Ducks feature films will return to the ice in the sixth episode of the series. These include Elden Henson as Fulton, Matt Doherty as Averman, Vinny La Russo as Adam Banks, Marguerite Moreau as Connie, Garret Henson as Guy and Justin Wong as Kenny Wu. Two notable actors from previous films, Joshua Jackson (Charlie) and Kenan Thompson (Russ “Knuckle Puck” Tyler), will not be in season one due to scheduling conflicts. However, Estevez is quoted in the EW article as saying, “If there is a season 2 and 3, we’ll keep the door open so all of the ducks from the original films can return.”
