The latest budget Nokia phone doesn’t have an in-box charger
- The budget-conscious Nokia X20 comes without a charger.
- It is unclear whether this is a decision for specific markets or all regions.
HMD confirmed that the new Nokia X-series smartphones will receive updates to the Android version for three years, similar to what we’ve seen Samsung phones do. It turns out, however, that HMD is banking on another current trend with this series.
TechDroider (h / t: XDA developer) found that HMD does not include a charger for the Nokia X20. Check out the tweet below.
“There is no plastic charger included, and with the 100% compostable housing we have reduced the environmental impact of the Nokia X20,” it says on the phone’s website under the heading “Sustainability”.
HMD isn’t the first phone brand to make this decision as Apple and Samsung have taken the charger out of their boxes. Xiaomi also removed the charger from the Mi 11 box in China, but allowed users to request a box with a charger at no additional cost.
We asked HMD if this is a one-off decision, whether it’s a general move or just for specific regions, and whether the company allows users to request a charger at no additional cost. We will update the article when you reply.
Either way, it’s also interesting to note that HMD does this for a budget-conscious phone. People buying a budget device may not want (or be able to) splash onto a charger in the first place. Hence, they could look at alternative budget devices like Samsung, Xiaomi, and others (that come with chargers) instead.
People in the wallet friendly phone market like this may still be using a microUSB device as well. In fact, we only released Nokia phones with microUSB this year with the Nokia 1.4. It’s unclear whether the USB-C charging cable would be included in the Nokia X20 box, but consumers wouldn’t be able to use their old charging cable with the new phone if they still have a micro-USB device.
