The Huawei Y9a is basically a Mate 30 Lite with a pop-up camera

Huawei Y9a

  • Huawei’s latest phone has a pop-up selfie camera and a 6.63-inch LCD display with a screen-to-body ratio of 92%.
  • Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Huawei plans to sell the phone in many locations outside of the Middle East as well as in Central and Pacific Asia.

When images of the Mate 30 series first went online, it seemed like Huawei was planning on releasing a Lite variant of the phone. Huawei never announced this device, but the company has only revealed what is actually a Mate 30 Lite by a different name. The only problem is that if you live outside of the few markets that the company plans to sell the device in, you’ll have trouble getting to grips with the Huawei Y9a. So far we’ve only seen it go to Iraq, where it’ll cost $ 239.

Aside from its limited availability, the Y9a seems like a decent mid-range option. The phone has a MediaTek Helio G80 processor and a 6.63-inch LCD display with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080. The highlight of the Y9a is a 16-megapixel pop-up selfie camera that gives the phone a 92% screen-to-body ratio. For all other photos there is a 64-megapixel primary camera, which is supplemented by a 2-megapixel depth sensor and 8-megapixel ultrawide and 2-megapixel macro cameras.

In the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, and some Central Asian countries, the company will sell a model of the Y9a that offers 8 GB of RAM, a 4,200 mAh battery, and 40 W fast charge support. Outside of these markets, the Y9a will have 6 GB of RAM and 4,300 mAh with 22.5 W charging support. According to Huawei, the 40 W adapter can charge the Y9a to 70% in about 30 minutes. Both variants have 128 GB of expandable memory, with Huawei EMUI 10.1 pre-installed on the phone.

Like most newer phones from Huawei, the Y9a doesn’t come with Google Play, so those who buy the phone will be forced to get their apps from Huawei’s AppGallery store.

The list of functions of the Y9a is rounded off by a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. At launch, Huawei plans to sell the phone in three colors: Space Silver, Sakura Pink and Midnight Black. If Huawei decides to release the Y9a in additional markets, we will let you know.
