The Far Side cartoonist Gary Larson debuts first new comics in 25 years
If ever there was a time the world needed satirical comic The Far SideIt would be 2020. With that Coronavirus pandemic We could all use the weird humor of cartoonist Gary Larson.
Larson, who stopped syndicating the cartoon every day in 1995, added new comics to the New Stuff area on Tuesday’s official The Far Side website.
The colored digital art board (see above) shows a Frankenstein-like cow monster who brings a tray of snacks and a hot drink to a crazy scientist who is excitedly sketching on a large notepad. The scientist can only be seen by his shadow on the wall.
Art has no caption, which means fans have to develop their own interpretation of the science fiction horror scene.
Other new Larson comics released Tuesday are a man greeting a taxidermist instead of a taxi; Aliens hiding behind some bushes next to a remote road and discussing their “probe and release” technique of kidnapping people; and a group of bears eating human scouts at a picnic table in the forest.
Anyone who reads the funny pages of the 1980-1995 newspaper will likely remember Larson’s fun, one-piece Far Side comic. Larson’s characteristic humor shows the ridiculous side of humanity as well as the secret life of animals – often cows.
Larson wrote on his website on Tuesday that he likes to retire, but he’s trying new things and drawing digitally for fun.
“A few years ago – finally fed up with my once loyal but now reliably telltale pen – I decided to try a digital tablet,” wrote Larson. “I didn’t know anything about these devices, but hoped that it would only get me through my annual Christmas card ordeal. I got one, cheered it on and, lo and behold, something completely unexpected happened: within a few moments I had fun drawing again. I was amazed at all the tools the thing had, all the creative potential it contained. I just had no idea how far these things had developed. “
According to a statement, Larson will continue to surprise fans by regularly posting new artwork on the website.
“I don’t want to mislead anyone here,” Larson wrote. “This corner of the website – New Stuff – is not a resurrection of The Far Side’s daily cartoons. The New Stuff you see here is the result of my journey into the world of digital art. I only explore, experiment and try things out. “
