Jolla was founded in 2011 after Nokia retired its MeeGo smartphone platform in favor of Windows Phone, creating the Sailfish OS platform. This has somehow held out beyond Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10 to remain one of the few Android alternatives out there.
Now, TechCrunch reported that after nearly 10 years, Jolla became profitable in 2020. The company reportedly posted year-over-year revenue growth of 53% and EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) of 34%.
“Jolla is fine,” CEO and co-founder Sami Pienimäki was quoted as saying by the sales outlet. “I am pleased that the company officially became profitable last year.”
The latest product is AppSupport for Linux Platforms, which provides Android app support for Linux-based platforms such as automotive infotainment systems and other embedded systems.
Harmony OS is another alternative mobile platform, but Pienimäki said TechCrunch that he doesn’t see Huawei’s platform as a rival.
“I wouldn’t necessarily see Huawei as a competitor to us with the Harmony OS value proposition and technology – I think it rather proves that the market is calling for something other than Android itself.”
Anyway, we are excited that Jolla will be making a profit in 2020. Sailfish OS may be a very niche offering in the smartphone space and the company is diversifying its business, but healthy alternatives to mobile operating systems are always welcome.
