Home alone

Writer John Hughes and director Chris Columbus released Home Alone in 1990. It was a huge hit and turned lead actor Macaulay Culkin into a huge star overnight. It’s easy to see why. Culkin’s portrayal of 8-year-old Kevin McCallister is Comedy Gold. He stayed home while his family mistakenly leave him behind when they go to Paris for Christmas. Kevin quickly enjoys the new freedom of being at home alone, but soon has to defend his house against the threat of the “Wet Bandits”. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern suit Culkin in comedy acting and timing as they fall victim to his traps at home. After all this time, the film still holds up. You can now stream the movie on Disney Plus.

Miracle on 34th Street

Micacle on 34th Street

The classic version of this 1947 Christmas story deserves to be featured on our list of the best Disney Plus Christmas movies. Macy’s New York City department store, like many other stores, has its own Santa Claus for Christmas. However, Kris Kringle (played by Edmund Gwenn), who has Macy’s Santa gig, insists he’s the real deal. Everything comes together in a now famous court scene in which we find out whether Santa Claus is real or not. Be prepared with some handkerchiefs. It is now available on Disney Plus.

The Christmas Chronicles

The Christmas Chronicles - one of the best Christmas movies on Netflix

One of Netflix‘s greatest original films of 2018 was this Christmas film, in which Kurt Russel can be seen as Santa Claus himself. However, due to the antics of some kids, Santa is stranded in Chicago on Christmas Eve, and there’s a race against time to bring him back together with his sleigh and reindeer. If he doesn’t finish his annual gift before Christmas Eve, the world will lose that great holiday spirit. Russell’s portrayal of Santa Claus as a hip grandpa is perfect for him, and it’s fun to watch the movie for yourself with your family and friends.

What can you say about White Christmas that others haven’t said? Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye play two former World War II soldiers who become successful music producers. They meet with two singers, played by Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, at a vacation home in Vermont to find out it belongs to Crosby and Kaye’s former military commander. The inn is in danger of being closed due to lack of snow and missing guests. The foursome try their best to put on a musical at the inn to save it. The plot doesn’t matter; What matters are the Irving Berlin songs featured and sung by the cast in White Christmas, including the theme song (which actually debuted in a previous film, Holiday Inn).

A Christmas Story (1938)

a Christmas song

Over the decades there have been countless film adaptations of Charles Dickins’ classic Christmas story. However, we believe the 1938 version could still be the best. Reginald Owen plays the evil curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge in a very faithful adaptation of the story. Scrooge is mean to just about anyone and all he cares about is money. However, on the night of Christmas Eve, he is visited by three ghosts who show him how his actions have affected his past and present and could affect his future. It’s an old-fashioned movie with an old story, but maybe that’s why we like it. It is now available to stream on HBO Max.

It is a wonderful life

Not much needs to be said about this film. Published in 1946 and directed by Frank Capra, it’s hard to believe that It’s A Wonderful Life wasn’t a big box-office hit. It only became popular when local television networks kept reissuing the film in the 1970s. Beyond the Christmas themes and setting, this film is also all about how one person can affect the lives of so many other people. Jimmy Stewart’s portrayal of George Bailey is true to the core. George is a humble man who is always on the lookout for others in the town of Bedford Falls. One fateful Christmas Eve gets George over the edge, however, and it is up to a helpful angel named Clarence to show him that his life is truly wonderful.

Oh, and let’s not forget one of the greatest movie villains of all time. Lionel Barrymore is perfect as opposite George Bailey, the super rich Henry Potter who tries his best to defeat George.

You can watch the classic black and white version of this movie, but Amazon Prime has a colored version to stream too.
