Telegram now lets you import your WhatsApp chat history
- You can now move your WhatsApp chat history to Telegram.
- The feature has been added to Telegram’s iOS app.
- It’s still not available for Android.
The exodus of WhatsApp users due to recent privacy policy changes has been a boon for alternative messaging apps like Telegram. To further increase its popularity, outgoing WhatsApp users can use Telegram to move their chat history to the app. This could be the only feature that will notify WhatsApp users who are still on the fence about exiting Facebook’s own platform.
Telegram yesterday launched the new tool for importing message history in its iOS app. It was bundled with version 7.4 of the app. The update notes for the version are as follows:
Telegram soon released another update with the version number 7.4.1, with which the mention of the migration tool was deleted. However, you can still import chats from WhatsApp.
How to export WhatsApp chats to Telegram
To transfer your WhatsApp chat history to Telegram, you need the latest versions of both apps. Once you have that, you can follow the steps below to import your chats from WhatsApp to Telegram.
Note that there is no way to batch import conversations. You have to move individual chats from WhatsApp to Telegram. That said, here are the steps that will help you with that.
- Open WhatsApp and tap the chat that you want to export
- Go to the Contact Info menu and select “Export Chat”.
- You will now see the option “Attach media” or “Without media”.
- Choose your preferred option
- Now select Telegram from the share menu and select the contact to whom you want to assign the imported chat
- You will now be asked to import messages. Select “Import”
