TL; DR
- A hacker claims to have stolen the personal data of 100 million T-Mobile customers.
- Motherboard was able to see a sample of this information and verify its accuracy.
- T-Mobile is investigating the matter.
A massive data breach could have exposed the sensitive personal information of up to 100 million T-Mobile customers. The information reportedly includes social security numbers, phone numbers, physical addresses, IMEI numbers, and driver’s licenses.
Accordingly Motherboard, the hacker claims to have obtained the information from several T-Mobile servers. The publication has examined samples of the data and has confirmed that it contains accurate information on T-Mobile users.
The hacker is also trying to make a pretty penny by selling this vast treasure trove of personal information on an underground forum. The asking price is six bitcoins, which is around $ 270,000 for a subset of data from 30 million T-Mobile customers.
“I think they already found out because we lost access to the backdoor servers,” said the sellers Motherboard, with reference to the action taken by T-Mobile against the violation. However, the hacker claims to have already downloaded the customer data locally. “It’s secured in several places,” they said.

In the meantime, T-Mobile has started the investigation. In response to the alleged hack, the company made the following statement:
We are aware of allegations made in an underground forum and have actively investigated their validity. We don’t currently have any additional information to share.
It is unclear what happens to the stolen data of millions of T-Mobile users. If it is finally sold, it could potentially harm all affected users and also trigger lawsuits against T-Mobile.
We will update this article when T-Mobile confirms the hack or shares other information about it.
