Suunto 9 Peak launches with smaller shell, 170 hours of GPS tracking

After a fleeting appearance at the FCC in March, the Suunto 9 Peak is now official.

The latest sports watch from the Finnish brand comes in a thinner, smaller and lighter shell that should make it more suitable for indoor and outdoor use. However, this doesn’t make it any less attractive. The Peak remains true to its “Nordic design values” and has a restrained, minimalist design with stainless steel bodies. Titanium and sapphire crystal face models are also offered.

Suunto’s goal was to reduce mass with the Suunto 9 Peak, and when compared to the larger Baro, its mission has been achieved. The 43mm face and 22mm straps should allow a lighter fit for most people.

The refreshed design also brings improvements under the hood. The battery life is massively improved as Suunto uses up to 170 hours of GPS tracking in Tour mode. This mode is not as accurate as continuous GPS tracking, but it should be suitable for longer adventures. With GPS accuracy first, the watch can last up to 25 hours in the most accurate mode. If the battery is ever empty, it can be completely refilled from 0% within an hour.

In terms of intelligent health monitoring, the Suunto 9 Peak has an SpO2 sensor that can perform spot checks, a heart rate monitor and track up to 80 different activities. The Peak is also waterproof up to 100 meters.

Other improvements include an automatic backlight with an environmental sensor and OTA software updates. The latter should make it less difficult for Suunto to make new functions available to users. The usual Suunto Smarts are also included, including weather information with the built-in barometer and a variety of readings for training guidance.
