Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode 11 recap: Ahsoka’s life is ‘Shattered’ as friend becomes foe

Ahsoka and Rex’s friendship is tested in this episode – this is super generic because it is above the spoiler warning.

Ouch. The penultimate episode of Star Wars: The clone warsFinal season came to Disney Plus on Friday when the dust settles after Siege of Mandalore. Unfortunately, our heroes in this episode have no chance to relax, as indicated in the episode title: Shattered.

Former Padawan Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) fooled ex-Sith apprentice Maul (Sam widower) to an epic lightsaber duelwhile Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) and Commander Rex (Dee Bradley Baker) took down his Mandalorian thugs. They would think that would give them a break. Instead, their reward is misery.

This episode swaps the large-scale conflict of the last two for a more intimate one, but doesn’t lose any of the intensity of the shift. The score of composer Kevin Kiner plays a major role in this – the Blade Runner-style synthesizer gives the whole thing a seriously dark atmosphere.

Run SPOILER 66.

One last Jedi chat

Ahsoka believes Maul is the key to sorting out Darth Sidious and agrees to take him back to Coruscant. He talks about Holo with members of the Jedi Council, Mace Windu, Yoda, Ki-Adi-Mundi and Aayla Secura.

This conversation is taking a moment Revenge of the Sith (About an hour and a minute after the film started) Shortly after the council sent Anakin Skywalker to Palpatine to assess his response to the news that Obi-Wan is about to fight General Grievous and likely the war is on break up.

It’s a shame Ahsoka didn’t arrive a moment earlier – she might have seen Anakin one last time. He will soon learn that Palpatine is Sidious and walk a few more steps down the dark path.

Yoda (Tom Kane) thanks Ahsoka for her help, but she says it was her “duty as a citizen” (she should probably have said “incredibly bad citizen”, but I think that is implied).

“Not as a Jedi?” Suggests Yoda.

“No, not yet,” she replies – which means that she would be ready to return to the order.

Then mace (T.C. Carson) is a complete fool if she questions her suspicions of Palpatine, so she fails to mention it Maul’s vision about Anakin, who becomes Sidious’s apprentice. A little more communication and they might have found Sidious’s conspiracy right there! That said, it was probably too late.

The Republic Cruiser goes to hyperspace on his trip to Coruscant – now somehow caught! – and Ahsoka reflects that she spent her time with the Jedi as a soldier, although they are meant for peacekeepers.

Then it happens – Ahsoka and Maul both feel the events in Palpatine’s office as Anakin turns to the dark side (“Power! Unlimited power!”). Then Rex gets a call from Palpatine.

“Execute Command 66,” says the Sith Lord, and the clones turn on Ahsoka (along with Jedi) across the galaxy).

It is clear, however, that Rex defies the order when he trembles and tells her to “find” his late brother Fives – the clone who was executed before in Season 6 the conspiracy behind the Order 66 inhibitor – Chips could reveal subsequent orders.

Ahsoka directs the blaster fire away from Rex and a number of other soldiers before fleeing to the ceiling.

The Mandalorians carry a trapped mouth. The woman on the left is Ursa Wren, mother of Sabine von Rebels.

HanniMaul lecturer

A trapped mouth spends much of this episode in a portable Mandalorian cell and looks very similar to one silence of the Lambs Villain. According to Bo-Katan, it is the last such cell from a bygone era – presumably that of Tarre Vizsla War on the Jedi – Developed to imprison “Force Swinging Maniacs”.

Once command 66 is issued, Rex commands Maul to run. Just as two soldiers are preparing to do so, Ahsoka saves her former enemy. However, she immediately makes it clear that she is not interested in a team (which would be bad advice, but would have been absolutely great).

“I need a distraction and it’s you,” she says, her lightsaber on his throat. “Now make a little mess, you’re good at that.”

Bo-Katan says goodbye to Ahsoka.

Lucasfilm

She doesn’t even give him a lightsaber – “I’m not rooting for you” – Ahsoka’s ruthlessness here is epic.

Fortunately for Maul, he’s basically a weapon. He gets his own version of Darth Vader corridor scene from Rogue One when he uses the Force to fight a group of clone troops. The violence is pretty shocking; He beheaded two clones with a wall plate, crushed another pair and impaled another one. Finally he pulls another through a closing explosion door and cuts off the soldier’s arm.

Maul stays behind with the last soldier’s communication link so he can hear their chatter. That will come in handy to escape.

Ahsoka and Rex’s bond takes them through Order 66.

Operation time

Ahsoka learns that the Fives Rex incident was suspicious of the true purpose of the inhibitor chips implanted in the head of each clone (which may have helped him resist briefly when Order 66 was triggered).

She and some astromech droid friends manage to isolate Rex before they seal up in a medical chamber. The operation droid tries to find the chip implanted in Rex’s brain, which causes Ahsoka to utter a well-known mantra.

“I am one with the Force and the Force is with me,” she repeats until Rex joins in.

The chip is in place, so Ahsoka orders the droid to remove it. She struggles against a number of clones bursting in, and Rex wakes up in time to support them, forcing his Order 66 brothers to withdraw. She asks her friend how widespread the order is.

“Ahsoka, we are all,” he says. “The entire Great Army of the Republic has been instructed to hunt down and destroy the Jedi.”

When an appalled Ahsoka reacts, the episode ends with the other clones preparing to break into the chamber. Get ready for a fight when the series finale hits Disney Plus on Monday, May 4th.

Easter eggs and observations

  • The clones that come to Mandalore to pick up Maul are red-cut shock troops based on Coruscant. I have always viewed her as a Palpatine thug party – blood red is very his color – suggesting that he wanted the body of his former apprentice to be delivered to him. Fortunately for Maul, he avoided this fate.
  • After talking to Ahsoka, three of the Jedi Council members’ holos blink in reverse order of their death in Revenge of the Sith – Aayla Secura, Ki-Adi-Mundi, then Mace Windu.
  • Rex orders the escape pods to be destroyed so Ahsoka and Maul cannot escape. Surely this is a health and safety nightmare ?! Ahsoka and Rex are also unable to escape after being repaired.
  • The grumpy-sounding Astromech CH-33P (Cheep) is voiced by executive producer Dave Filoni, just like Chopper in the following series Rebels.
  • “I am one with the Force and the Force is with me” is a phrase that was made famous by the war monk Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One.
  • Ahsoka still doesn’t know that Palpatine is Sidious. Will she and Rex put it together in the next episode?

Come back next Friday to see the final roundup of season 7 of The Clone Wars!
