TL; DR

  • Spotify is currently testing a new ad-supported tier that will give users more control over the service.
  • It’s called Spotify Plus and it comes with some premium features but only costs $ 0.99 per month.
  • There is not a word that it will be introduced as an official plan.

Spotify is testing a new ad-supported tier that includes selected premium benefits at a much lower price.

First discovered by The edge, Spotify Plus is $ 0.99 per month, a fraction of the cost of the Premium plan. With this lower price, users also get the core features of Premium like unlimited title skips per hour (as opposed to six in the free tier) and the ability to play any title they want.

It is still unclear whether Plus offers other Plus-exclusive benefits, such as playback at a higher bit rate or downloading songs for offline playback. Nonetheless, at its price point, Plus seems like an excellent way to enjoy Spotify without spending ten times more money a month.

There is one major caveat, however. One of the main reasons Plus is so cheap is its dependence on advertising. Some users may be able to pay $ 9 for uninterrupted service, especially if they rely on Spotify for social gatherings. Spotify doesn’t specify how it implements ads.

Even so, Plus seems like a smart game from Spotify. A gateway plan for those who can’t afford premium or just want more control over the platform should help get more users on board.

Spotify Plus is only available to a “limited number” of users for the time being, according to a statement The edge. There is also no confirmation that it will be launched as an official part of Spotify’s offerings.
