Speed Test G: ROG Phone 5 Ultimate vs Galaxy S21 Ultra (a close fight)

Asus’ ROG Phone 5 Ultimate is supposed to be a master between 18GB of RAM and other improvements, but how much advantage does it really offer over a “normal” flagship like the Galaxy S21 Ultra? Gary Sims might have found out. He just ran a realistic speed test of the ROG phone versus its Samsung counterpart to find out. The results are immediately surprising and expected.

The ROG Phone 5 Ultimate turned out to be the winner, but only barely – it finished the test suite just 2.4 seconds earlier than the Samsung flagship. The Asus device had a decent lead in the GPU test, but could only marginally prevail in the CPU test and even fell behind in the mixed-case benchmark. The benefit has never been so great that you would regret buying the S21 Ultra.

This doesn’t mean the extra 6GB of RAM on board the ROG phone is pointless – rather, it has its limitations compared to the 12GB that Samsung offers. The most important component here is the Snapdragon 888, which performed well in both phones during the more than one minute duration of the speed test G. The Asus phone should have a more advanced cooling system. to increase for free as a sustainable performance.

Currently, there are many other reasons to choose the ROG Phone over Samsung hardware. The extra touch input can make all the difference in a fast-paced shooter, and the 6,000 mAh battery ensures it lasts longer whether you’re playing games or checking your social feeds. These results just show that if you prefer the Galaxy S21 Ultra for its cameras, optional pen input, or other distinct advantages, you shouldn’t feel guilty – in practice, you probably won’t lose much of its performance.
