OnePlus raised more than a few questions when it switched from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip in the original Nord to a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 in the Nord 2. Did the company take the risk of alienating performance enthusiasts in the name of the award? We now know exactly who would win this battle between OnePlus Nord 2 and OnePlus Nord, and it’s definitely not a train breakdown – far from it.
Android authority‘s Gary Sims put the OnePlus Nord 2 up against its predecessor in its more realistic Speed Test G benchmark, and the newer phone decimates its predecessor. It’s not even close competition. The Nord 2 finished the CPU and GPU tests about 20 seconds faster than the older phone and was still 10 seconds ahead in a mixed use scenario. The newer North finished the overall test almost a full minute earlier.

Sims attributed the OnePlus Nord 2 win in part to a Mali GPU that appears to be much faster than the Adreno 620 from last year’s handset. We would add that the Dimensity 1200 is based on the newer Arm Cortex-A78 architecture, with the Snapdragon 765G being based on the Cortex-A76. Simply put, the MediaTek part’s newer roots give it a better foundation.
That could make the purchase decision relatively easy for you. If you are new to the OnePlus world and have a choice between Nord 2 and the original, then unless you can find an extraordinary deal for its ancestor, get the latest model. While both phones have mediocre cameras, the Nord 2 is far enough ahead in terms of raw performance that you will likely appreciate the difference in years to come.
