Like many people, I first noticed Jimmy O. Yang in the long run HBO series Silicon Valley in which he played the shameful and funny Jian-Yang. Despite the show ending in December, Yang has never been so busy. The actor, writer and comedian was seen as Bernard in an open shirt and gold chain the hugely popular film Crazy Rich Asians. During an interview in CNET’s new podcast I’m So Obsessed, Yang discussed the film and its cultural implications.

“I hope (when) we will look back in five, even ten years in the future that there will be many more films like [Crazy Rich Asians] It’s been successful and has great stories about Asian-American culture, “said Yang.” I hope that there will be a new generation of young Asian Americans who have been inspired to enter the industry. “

In May, Yang’s first stand-up special, Good deal, debuted on Amazon Prime. It also appears in the new one Steve Carell comedy Space Force on Netflix. He plays Dr. Chan Kaifang, who along with Carell, John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, and others, is responsible for building the United States Space Force. The cast of the cast is simply incredible, and yet the name that stands out the most is Malkovichs.

“If you see someone like Steve Carell on the street, you freak out. You say, ‘Oh my god, that’s a movie star,'” joked Yang. “But when you see someone like John Malkovich, you can’t believe your eyes. It’s like seeing a kind of mythical centaur-like creature.”

In our comprehensive conversation, Yang discusses everything about Space forces and his book How to American: A Guide for Immigrants to Disappoint their Parents. We also discuss the three pillars of hot sauce; his multiple obsessions like Animal Crossing and his Youtube Abuela for cooking; and be Dog toffeewhose new fuse TV show was forced to cease production due to the pandemic.

Listen to my entire conversation with Yang and Subscribe to I’m So Obsessed in your favorite podcast app. In each episode we meet an artist, actor, or creator to learn more about his work, career, and current obsession.
