- Leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer shared the rendering of Sony’s new flagship Xperia 1 III.
- He also said it will have a leaner body and a periscope camera.
- The headphone jack and the two front-facing speakers also return.
When Sony released the Xperia 1 II last summer, it quickly became one of the company’s best phones with a compelling mix of features including a 21: 9 4K display, headphone jack and two front speakers, and a pro-oriented camera. So it’s no wonder that Sony apparently wants to build on the Xperia 1 II instead of scrapping the design.
According to Steve Hemmerstoffer, a frequent tidbit who shared some early details about the upcoming Xperia 1 III as well as the device’s renderings, Sony fans can look forward to a periscope camera for better quality telephoto shots. Otherwise, it looks like the phone will keep a lot of what made the Xperia 1 II unique. Like its predecessor, the phone will have a 6.5-inch OLED display with an aspect ratio of 21: 9 and 4K resolution – although it doesn’t like that a higher refresh rate is one of the planned upgrades. According to Hemmerstoffer, Sony shaved the frame with the new phone measuring 161.6 x 67.3 x 8.4 mm. For context, the Xperia 1 II came in at 166 x 72 x 7.9 mm. You’ll find that the next Sony handset is a bit thicker – likely due to the periscope camera.

New to the outside of the phone is a special key combination borrowed from the Xperia Pro. But as you can see from the renders, this won’t come with the sacrifice of two front speakers and a headphone jack, which should make most people happy. Hemmerstoffer had no details to share in the phone’s internals. We’ll probably learn that in the next few weeks.
