TL; DR

  • A Sony Xperia phone has just passed the FCC with the label number PY7-60551T.
  • It’s unclear whether it’s the Xperia 1 III or the Xperia 5 III, but it’s very likely one of them.
  • FCC certification is one of the final steps in getting a smartphone to market here in the US, so this phone should land here soon.

Sony has already “launched” two new phones in its popular Xperia series: the Xperia 1 III and the Xperia 5 III. However, as usual, Sony is postponing the release around the world and is very vague about when certain countries will actually receive it.

However, fans in the US can rest easy as one of the phones has just passed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Achieving FCC certification is usually one of the last stops on a smartphone’s journey from development to US sales. As a result, at least one of the new Xperia phones will soon hit US stores.

Unfortunately, it is not clear which phone it is. The FCC sometimes uses randomly generated code names for devices on behalf of brands in the interests of confidentiality. This time it’s PY7-60551T. We have seen this on Sony phones before. However, considering that Sony has already confirmed that the Xperia 1 III and 5 III will land in the US, it is clear that this certification applies to one of them.

So far, there have been rumors that Sony won’t launch these phones on the US market until late August. However, with this FCC list now live, it is very likely that the rumor is false and we will see it here sooner.

The Sony Xperia 1 III is already available in selected markets such as China and Japan.
