Sony Xperia 1 III software upgrade schedule confirmed

TL; DR
- Over the past week, rumors have spread that the Sony Xperia 1 III could only get a software upgrade.
- This would have been bad news considering the phone starts at $ 1,300.
- However, Sony refutes that rumor, saying it “aims” to bring more than an Android upgrade to its newest flagship.
In the past few days, rumors have surfaced in several tech publications that Sony may have an anemic plan for software upgrades for its newest flagship phone. Rumor has it that the company only wanted to offer an Android upgrade for the Sony Xperia 1 III.
Fortunately, Sony confirmed with Android authority that this rumor is not true. However, the company’s language does not make us confident that it will do its best to please its customers.
Here is the full length statement:
It is not true that the Xperia 1 III will only have an Android operating system update. Sony intends to support the Xperia 1 III with the latest Android updates for two years after its launch, and we expect Android OS to be updated more than once during that period.
The use of the phrase “aims at” seems rather soft to us. One would think that Sony would have used a more definitive language there, such as “obligate” or “promise”. Regardless, it looks like owners of a Sony Xperia 1 III can look forward to more than one software upgrade, probably to Android 12 and Android 13.
