Sony should think about launching a new PlayStation portable
Oliver Cragg / Android Authority
Portable gaming has picked up speed again with the plethora of mobile titles, more powerful phones, and portable consoles like the Nintendo Switch. But a gaming company is sorely missed by the mobile arena. Sony has a long history of portable gaming systems with the Vita and PSP coming to mind. But what if the company launches a new PlayStation portable console? Would you like this to happen?
This is exactly the question we asked our readers in a recent survey. Find the results below.
Would you like to see a new PlayStation portable console?
Results
We have seen close to 1,200 votes in this poll since it was published on August 28th. Readers had a choice of two options, but judging by the results, we hardly needed a second choice.
The case for a new portable PlayStation is exciting. Sony could leverage its rich PS4 and PS5 libraries, add expandable storage via microSD cards to the device, and also introduce the smart feel of the DualSense controller. Those who oppose it don’t seem to want to lug around another console or argue that Sony’s smartphones could potentially take the place of a new portable PlayStation.

- blindexecutioner: No back touchpad or trackpad. People want buttons. This wouldn’t replace a mouse and keyboard. I definitely agree to the storage. It must also be around $ 250 or less.
- Jason Laird: The truth is, nobody wants to carry you around when they can just pull out their phone. That and the fact that you will always be using some kind of stupid proprietary memory card.
- Godisafairytale: Sony already makes phones. Very good, powerful phones that can easily handle even the most demanding Android games. And that play well with Dual Shock 4 controllers. Why should they cannibalize their own products? You could open up PSNow to Android (maybe exclusive to Xperia phones) and make Dualsense compatible, and enter the cellular market for a lot less money.
- Techngro: I still have my PS Vita. It’s modified and has all the hacks installed. But mostly it just sits and does nothing. Had so many PSPs. I rebuilt it and sold it. The Vita was such a great design, but Sony gave up too soon or maybe they never really had any intention of endorsing it for the long term. But I would be very happy about a new handheld. One that can compete with the Switch. Or at least give you the option to broadcast your game on a big screen. And yes, non-proprietary storage is a must. That was a big problem with both PSP and Vita.
- lsatmata: The next PSP (if Sony ever manages) has to use downscaled PS5 technology. The problem with a portable console is physical media. Nintendo Switch using a cartridge actually makes developers / publishers pay more than a BD because the cartridge uses NOR flash and is much more expensive than NAND flash. In addition, Macronix, the largest NOR Flash manufacturer, still cannot produce a 64 GB cartridge, even Nintendo avoids 32 GB cartridges because they are expensive.
That’s it for this poll. Thank you for your votes and comments. If you have any other thoughts, please leave a comment below.
