Sony PlayStation CEO says PS5 design is ‘bold, daring and future facing’
When Sony and Microsoft released their respective Playstation 4 and Xbox One Devices Seven years ago, the devices were designed to fit into our living room, with almost exclusively black rectangular and parallelogram designs.
If the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Land in stores later this year, they will be hard to ignore. The new Xbox is shaped like a monolith, with a striking neon green fan on top.
The PS5 meanwhile has two white fields Sandwich a black page. The device It looks like it comes from one of Sony’s own futuristic games, complete with dramatic blue lights, seemed to shine against the white panels.
“We wanted to do something that was almost brave and daring,” said Sony’s PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan in an interview with CNET after the company’s unveiling on Thursday. “We wanted something future-oriented and future-oriented, something for the 2020s.”
Sonys Reveal PS5
It only comes a few months before the device hits the shelves on time for the Christmas business. For both Sony and Microsoft, the next generation consoles offer the opportunity to improve the visual glasses of their games. The worlds that Sony demonstrated on Thursday ranged from bustling cities to lush green pastures filled with seemingly endless blades of grass, trees, and leaves.
But so far only visuals can reach visuals. Sony is also launching new sequels to fans’ favorite games, such as the hit action adventure Marvels Spider-Man from 2018 and the futuristic role-playing game Horizon: Zero Dawn from 2017. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West will choose where their predecessors left off while adding new characters. Although the new Horizon game has no launch date, Spider-Man will be released along with the PS5.
The design of the PS5 is designed to demonstrate Sony’s belief that the technology inside and the games running on it are as eye-catching as the outside you see. Ryan uses lively phrases like “quantum leap over the current generation” and mentions that games “will be transformative in how they look, sound and feel”.
He also said that the white-black version of the PS5 will be the starting color combination.
Ryan declined to say how much the PS5 will cost, whether the Discless All-Digital version will be cheaper, or when it will be available. But he said it Manufacturing remains on track despite the coronavirus pandemic that has caused turmoil around the world as it infected more than 7.4 million people and killed more than 420,000 patients.
In the midst of the uncertain economic climate that has driven some businesses out of business, Ryan says Ryan is working with retailers to ensure that the pre-order process is as smooth as possible. “We are confident that with them we will find a way to ensure that PlayStations find their way to consumers who want them,” he said.
Sony confirmed that additional events are planned before the PS5 launches in the fall, including pricing, launch date, and other details. Ryan declined to discuss the future of Sony’s PlayStation VR virtual reality headset, its PlayStation Now streaming service, and whether Sony would offer a disc-trade-in program to customers who are fully digital Buy PS5. Further details will be announced at later events.
Below are edited excerpts from CNET’s conversation with Ryan about what to expect from Sony’s device.
Q: Talk to me about the design of the PS5 and the look you showed today.
Ryan: It was important for us tonight because we wanted to show that what we do with PS5 is really a quantum leap over the current generation. And the intent was that the games would do that for us.
I use the expression in the opening preamble of the show. These games change the look and feel. And the sheer beauty, the scale that comes out of the show.
I’ve been there for a long time. I’ve done all of these PlayStation starts. I’ve never had the pleasure of being in a situation where we had so much software of such quality at the time before launch. We showed over two dozen games tonight. Over half will be available exclusively for PlayStation when it launches, and nine from our worldwide studios. I really want to convey the message that we are only beginning here.
What is the difference between the fully digital and the standard PS5? Of course there is a CD, but are you concentrating on more storage space?
As you saw, there is a slight difference in the form factor of the two consoles. I’m sure you’ve also noticed that the basic design aesthetics are consistent between them. So there is that and the fact that digital output doesn’t have a hard drive. That’s it. Otherwise they are identical products.
We only acknowledge that our community is becoming increasingly digital over time. In the first quarter of this year, two thirds of the newly purchased games were downloaded digitally. People are increasingly digital, like they do with their music and video, and we want to see that.
Of course, the disc version also offers backward compatibility with these old discs.
We said the PS5 was designed for PS4 games. We’re going through the process with the publishers and developers who are testing this fairly extensive library of over 4,000 games. We are happy with the progress we have made.
Do I buy this separately on the camera? And what’s going on with your PSVR virtual reality headset?
All we have said so far and what we are not adding tonight is that the current PlayStation VR is compatible with PS5. The camera we demonstrated tonight will be available as a peripheral and will not be in the box when it starts.
How hard will it be for me to get my hands on a PS5 if I want one?
Today is a very important day for us because after today we will see significant retail activity related to pre-order generation even if the price is missing. But we’re going to collect and extrapolate these data points, which this means for first day demand – and we’ve obviously done this many times, and you know we’re not perfect, but we’re not bad at it – – and that will be again influence the production process.
A lot of very serious work is beginning for us at the moment.
