  • The April 2021 Sony PlayStation 5 update will be released on Wednesday April 14, 2021.
  • The most notable new feature of the update is the ability to save PS5 games to an external drive.
  • Cross-generational share play is also delivered with the new update.

Today Sony announced the launch date for the first major software update to its newest console, the PlayStation 5. The update will be available starting Wednesday April 14th, 2021 for those lucky enough to own a PS5.

So far, the few Sony PlayStation 5 updates we’ve seen have been pretty small and haven’t brought in a lot of new features. However, tomorrow’s update brings two long-awaited features to the console. Additionally, Sony has promised some cool new features for its mobile app – although they won’t be part of tomorrow’s update and there isn’t a set date for their arrival.

The biggest new feature coming to PS5 consoles tomorrow is the ability to save PS5 games to an external drive. While you could already do this with previous generation games (e.g. PS4 games downloaded from the online store), you couldn’t do this with PS5 games. This forced you to delete games when your internal SSD was full and then download them again whenever you wanted to play them next.

Now you can move PS5 games from internal drive to external drive with ease. If you want to play them again, you can just move them back. This is far faster than re-downloading or re-ripping from a physical disc.

Note, however, that you cannot play PS5 games from an external drive. You cannot download a game directly to an external drive either. This Sony PlayStation 5 update also does not provide a way to update your internal SSD.

Another big new feature that will be available tomorrow is intergenerational share play. Share Play allows you to play local co-op games online with friends as if they were in the room with you. For example, if you’re playing a split-screen racing game, you can do so on your console while your friend is participating with their own console anywhere in the world.

Unfortunately, Share Play won’t work if one of you has a PS5 and the other doesn’t. Tomorrow’s Sony PlayStation 5 update will change that so you can share Play Sessions with friends who have PS4 consoles.

Finally, Sony is promising some big new updates to its mobile app. In the coming weeks you will be able to participate in a multiplayer session on your PS5 via the app. You can also manage your PS5 storage remotely and compare your trophy collection with those of your friends. Finally, you can also sort and filter products that are displayed in the PlayStation Store. You should be able to do this from day 1.

You can download the Android version of the PlayStation app here.
