Sony Airpeak drone will carry your Sony Alpha camera to the sky
- Sony announced the Airpeak drone.
- The new drone can tow your DSLR camera.
Sony teased the release of a drone late last year, and there have been some rumors since then, but things are finally official. If you were hoping for a new consumer-grade quadcopter that could rival the popular DJI products on store shelves near you, you may find yourself disappointed when looking for a powerful professional drone that you can put a full mirrorless screen into – DSLR can build in heaven, this can be the drone for you!
The Sony Airpeak drone was of course announced digitally at CES 2021. Sony didn’t shower us with details about the new machine, especially with the official release set for later this spring. You have time to make a few changes before printing a data sheet.
While we wait for specific details, Sony is making it pretty clear that they are doing this out of a passion for aerial photography with a touch of AI robotics. The Airpeak is now a single aircraft, but they call this a “brand” We hope to see many more drones from the company as they gain experience in the sky.
The Airpeak aircraft is designed for Sony Alpha cameras. The promo pictures show the drone with an A7 in a 3-axis stabilized, centrally suspended gimbal ring. The 4K aerial video of the drone with the Alpha A7S III shows other material.

Given the size and caliber of the drone we’re seeing, we have to compare the new Sony Airpeak to machines like the Intel Falcon 8+ and the DJI M600 Pro. The Intel drone is also designed to carry a Sony Alpha camera and has a starting price of around $ 42,000. The DJI M600 Pro is available for less than that and relies on the versatile Ronin camera rigs to attach the camera to the drone. In any case, Sony competes with the Airpeak in a high-end market.
Are you a drone pro looking to get your hands on this drone in front of the public? Sony is accepting applications for employees to finalize the Airpeak platform’s specifications and features. Unless you’re a drone pro with a proven drone business, you’ll have to wait until spring 2021 to get your hands on this flying machine. Hopefully we won’t have to wait that long to find out more details about the airframe.
