Some Apple M1 iMacs have crooked displays, and now you can’t unsee it

TL; DR

  • Some new Apple M1 iMac computers have skewed displays.
  • The problem is quite noticeable in a YouTuber video.
  • So far nothing is known about the scope of the problem.

Apple announced the new M1-powered iMac earlier this year, the company’s first desktop computer built on arm-based silicon. The new computer is a sleek all-in-one display that sits on a stand, but it turns out there is an odd manufacturing flaw.

YouTuber iPhonedo (h / t: MacRumors) noticed that his M1 iMac had a tilted display and used a ruler to check that one side was 7.6 centimeters (2.99 inches) from the desk and the other side was 8 centimeters (3.14 inches) from the desk. It’s pretty noticeable when you look for it, and it could definitely be a case that you can’t see it later. Check out the video below to take a look at the problem.

The YouTuber wasn’t the only person to spot the problem, as two users in Apple’s support community and a Redditor also noticed a crooked display. Meanwhile, MacRumors also reported that their test device had a “slightly” tilted display. We’re not sure how many people are affected by the problem, but we suspect that it isn’t a large number. On the other hand, we will likely see more users reporting the discrepancy after hearing about it and checking their own computer.

There is also no information about the exact cause of the problem, but it probably has something to do with the stand and the seven screws that hold the display. Either way, you should check your M1 iMac as soon as you unpack it. It’s not the worst problem in the world, but it’s still an odd shortcoming when you’re spending over $ 1,000.
