Another flagship series of Apple TV Plus is back. See season 2, the next installment in the science fiction epic starring Jason Momoa about a blinded world who hits the streamer later this month.
Despite mixed to negative reviews for Season 1, See is an odd but compelling show that is hard to turn away from. And it must have found its audience for Apple to reinvest and bring us a second season.
After a grand cliffhanger finale, COVID-19 delays, new casting announcements, and cryptic trailers, See is one of the most exciting recurring series for Apple.

Apple TV Plus
Apple TV Plus may not have as much content compared to other streaming services, but it makes up for it in the quality of its content. This includes series like For All Mankind and Ted Lasso to films like The Banker, Greyhound and Palmer
What is sight
Lake takes place in a distant future. Generations ago, a mysterious virus blinded the world’s population. Now humanity survives in small clans, in some cases reduced to warring factions and in others thriving without sight.
The premise, frankly, sounded like a bad idea when Apple announced it in 2018. But great accomplishments and great cinematography helped make it a series to look for.

It was also very sensitive to disability issues, despite issues that, in their reflection on blindness in the real world, could only have been exploitative and ableist.
Instead, eyesight is presented as a neutral human quality rather than a gift or curse. What is eyesight really worth if nobody has it around? Or, more importantly, when society is not based on the assumption that eyesight is the standard? When blindness is fully supported within the communities?
In other words, See was ready to recognize that disability has no inherent quality but is defined by social structures that favor some and punish others. Her message was delivered in a messy, sometimes awkward way, but it felt progressive in her politics.
What happened in season 1?
When sighted children are born in the Alkenny tribe, their mother Maghra and adoptive father Baba Voss go on the run to protect them from the queen of a nearby dynasty who wants to kill anyone who bears the curse of sight.
As the family struggles to survive, we learn that Baba and Maghra both live with secrets about their past. Following the instructions of their seeing biological father, the children consider whether they should go to him and learn to live apart from their families and their tribe.
But when allegiances break, daughter Haniwa is kidnapped by shadowy men who work for someone from Baba Voss’ past. Someone Baba hoped never to see again.
When and where can I watch season 2?
The second season of See premieres on August 27, 2021, almost two years after the premiere of Season 1.
The series is available exclusively on the Apple streamer. It is rolled out weekly on the Friday after the premiere.
Apple has given the go-ahead for a third season that is currently being shot. Season 3 has no release date yet.
Was Season 2 of See affected by COVID-19?
As with many series and films, the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak disrupted production and delayed the release of Lake Season 2.
Filming for Season 2 was originally scheduled to begin in Toronto in early 2020. Production halted in March due to security concerns and a city-wide lockdown.
See Season 3 is currently being filmed in Toronto.
Other Apple TV Plus series hit by the end of production include Servant, For All Mankind, Lisey’s Story, and Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet.
Who is involved
Most of the cast and crew from Season 1 are returning for Season 2.
Jason Momoa plays Baba Voss in front of the camera. Other members of the leading actors are:
- Alfre Woodard as Paris, an elder of the Alkenny tribe
- Sylvia Hoeks as Queen Kane
- Hera Hilmar as Maghra Kane, wife of Baba Voss and (as we learn in Season 1) sister of Queen Kane
- Archie Madekwe and Nesta Cooper as the sighted children of Baba Voss and Maghra Kane
- Yadira Guevara-Prip as Bow Lion, a warrior spy from the Alkenny tribe, who is known as the “shadow” and can move undetected among other blind people
New to the line-up is Dave Bautista, who will play Edo Voss, Baba’s older brother. Baba’s dark, violent past seems to overlap with that of his brother, a feared general who kidnapped Baba’s daughter Haniwa.
Watchmen’s Tom Misen also plays an unknown role.
See was created and written by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Peaky Blinders) and directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire).
Executive producers include Steven Knight, Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Dan Shotz, and Kristen Campo. Joe Strechay serves as an associate producer and blindness advisor.
Is one of the actors really blind?
The question of blind actors came when the first season of the series came out. While the main cast all worked with a blindness counselor, Joe Strechay, who spent weeks teaching them how to move and interact with the world around them without relying on their eyesight, there were relatively few blind actors on screen.
The actors worked with associate producer and blindness advisor Joe Strechay for weeks.
“There are some actors who are blind or visually impaired in every episode,” series director and executive producer Francis Lawrence told The Wrap in 2019. “We definitely tried to be as inclusive as possible. And I’ll say this season is a start, I still think we can do better. And I think we’re going to try to do a lot better when we get this second season to include more blind people – especially with the more visible characters and leads and series regulars.
Apple has not released any statements about how new roles and positions in the crew were handled for Season 2. Hopefully, Lawrence’s desire to do better will be felt throughout Season 2.
What can we expect from See Season 2?
Since the main plot point of Lake Season 2 is likely to be an attempt to save Haniwa, the inclusion of Dave Bautista as Edo Voss will be a big deal.
There is no doubt that we will learn more about the Baba Voss backstory in Season 2. In season one, we learned that Baba had a dark past with slave traders, although we learned little of the details. “I swore I’d never go back here,” Baba Voss says in the season two trailer as he prepares to face his brother. He is clearly to blame. “I know this enemy. I was that enemy, ”he says.
Edo Voss is clearly a formidable villain and a fighter with skills comparable to Baba. He controls “the greatest military power in the world,” as we learn. And different factions are fighting for a new world order. Baba’s fight for his daughter will face a fight for the fate of the world, it seems.
And judging by the trailer, we’re going to get many more battle scenes inspired by the iconic Japanese film and television character Zatoichi, a wandering swordsman who is almost unbeatable. Baba Voss’ battle scenes in season 1 were absolutely breathtaking.
Apple has been pretty quiet about Season 2. The trailer and casting announcements are the bulk of what we have to work with, so these are the main plot points we can derive for now.
That’s what we know about season 2.
You can watch it on August 27th on Apple TV Plus. Or let yourself be caught up in season 1 until then.
